Autoflowers carry genes from Cannabis ruderalis, a hardy wild type from Russia and Central Asia, which makes them flower on their own clock rather than with the seasons. The first well-known autoflower, Lowryder, appeared in the early 2000s, and breeders have since bred the trait into many famous lines.
